Detailed information is available here. Weather The weather in early October is expected to be pleasant. Temperatures will be between 16 to 30 degrees Celsius. The Monsoon is likely to have subsided by then, but you should expect to encounter a drizzle or a light shower during the stay or on the run. The weather in the Western Ghats can change rapidly. It might be rainy and wet or dry and dusty on race day. The runs themselves are mostly through coffee plantations and runners can expect to be in the shade quite a bit. Having said that, it can be hot and humid during the run. At higher elevations, there may be little cover for the runner and it can also get quite windy.
Itinerary Runners should plan on reaching Ballavara, Karnataka by 4 pm on Friday, October, 6th, 2017 and leave before 12 noon on Sunday, October 8th, 2017. We strongly recommend that you DO NOT bring your own vehicles to this event. The roads are narrow and can be dangerous. Parking is also very limited in the Homestays that we plan to use during the event. Since the run traverses through private coffee plantations, you will not be allowed to take your personal vehicles there. We will not be able to assist you with parking and transfers if you bring your own vehicles. Note: If you participated in our 2016 event, we have moved all our accommodation to Ballavara. We will not be staying at Kemmanagundi this year.
Costs Runners residing in Karnataka should plan on spending a total of around Rs. 6,900 on the following items to come to the Malnad Ultra. Participants from other regions should consider the additional cost of traveling to Bangalore.
Package for Accommodation, Transfers from Birur and additional meals on twin-sharing basis (Rs. 4,200)
Run Registration (Rs. 1,840). Includes Service Tax, Swachh Bharat Cess and Online Payment Service Charges
Personal Safety Personal safety of runners is our primary concern. A large team of volunteers and the staff working in the Coffee Plantations are assisting us in putting this run together. We request all participants to stay with the larger group and not wander around, especially after dark. You are close to nature and the unexpected can happen! The Bhadra Sanctuary borders this area and there is a possibility of wild animals lurking around. Do carry a flashlight or a head-torch with you in the dark.
The aid-stations will be manned by the staff of the coffee plantations that are hosting our run. All of them are residents on the plantations and to that extent are known to our hosts. You will have to be patient with language challenges. Most of the staff speak Kannada or a sprinkling of Hindi, English, Tamil and other South Indian languages. All official team-members will be wearing Yellow-Green Volunteer T-Shirts and will understand hand motions and smiles!
Mobile Network Being a hilly and remote area, mobile network is very erratic and patchy. BSNL and Aircel networks work better than others. Text messages via SMS will likely go through but voice calls may drop frequently. Data connectivity is very poor and you might get some 2G/3G at higher elevations. You can charge your phones in your rooms. The electricity supply is erratic because of the terrain. We suggest that you expect your mobile phones to not work and think about your phone mostly as a camera! In this way, if they do work, it will be a pleasant surprise.
